Three police officers survived an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in Daadab, Garissa County, after suspected militants planted the explosive on the road.
Garissa County Commissioner Naftali Koojo confirmed that the incident occurred at around 6am on Thursday, and security agencies continue to remain on high alert over the insurgents who have been targeting officers in the volatile North Eastern part of the country.
The suspected militants buried the IED in a hole they had supposedly dug within the road, according to videos and images obtained by Kenyans.co.ke.
During the incident, two civilians who were onboard the police vehicle sustained soft tissue injuries and were rushed to the hospital with the officers for assessments.
The police vehicle, a Land Cruiser, sustained significant damage in the attack, with its bumpers and siren blown off.
The bonnet, as well as the front and rear lights, were also shattered, although the tires remained intact.
As of the time of publishing, no militant group had claimed responsibility for the incident, even as the government intensified security patrols across the region in response.
North Eastern counties remain high-risk areas for terror attacks despite government efforts to stabilise the region, with recent incidents primarily targeting critical communication infrastructure and security personnel.
In March last year, nine police officers were injured after an IED blasted their vehicles while they were on patrol near the Welmerer area in Garissa.
The attack, which happened at around 5:30am, blasted and destabilised two armoured police vehicles in the process.
In December 2023, police officers lost their lives, while two others were seriously injured in an IED attack on a vehicle along the Dadaab-Garissa road.
In 2019, 11 General Service Unit (GSU) officers were killed when their vehicle ran over an improvised explosive device (IED) in North Eastern Kenya. The officers, based at Harhar GSU Camp, were on a routine security patrol near Degow, along the Liboi-Damajale road close to the Kenya-Somalia border, when the explosion occurred.
