Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has called on her county residents to reject any form of violence and instead uphold peace and the rule of law. This follows an attempted assassination of her deputy, Oyugi Magwanga.

In a brief statement on Monday evening, the vocal governor also called on security agencies to move swiftly to investigate the matter and arrest those responsible.

According to Wanga, any occurrence that raises concern about the safety and security of any leader deserves attention and immediate action.

"I am deeply concerned about reports of an incident involving my deputy governor, Hon. Oyugi Magwanga, last evening. Any occurrence that raises concerns about the safety and security of our leaders deserves attention and immediate action," Wanga commented.

"I urge our security agencies to move swiftly and impartially to investigate this matter and ensure those responsible are brought to justice. I also appeal to the people of Homa Bay to remain calm and united during this difficult time," she added.

While condemning the attack against her deputy, Wanga expressed fears about a recurrence of what happened to Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Were.

In particular, she noted that the incident came at a time when the country was still mourning the death of Were, who was shot dead by unknown assailants on Ngong Road near the City Mortuary roundabout.

On Sunday, May 11, Oyugi Magwanga's vehicle was reportedly attacked by unknown people as he was returning home. Confirming the incident, Magwanga said he received information that he was being trailed.

Reports indicate that two gunmen allegedly opened fire at the deputy governor's vehicle at the entrance of his homestead; luckily, Magwanga was not inside the car.

While addressing the press on Monday morning, Magwanga urged Kenyans to remain calm, adding that he would not be intimidated by people who are after his life.

"When I was coming to my home, I got information that I was being trailed. It forced me to change my route to Gamba and come from the opposite route," the deputy governor recalled.

"I had already informed my people to open the gate in anticipation. My security was also ready to receive me, and as soon as I got near the gate, my security sighted them and opened fire on them," he added.
