Dr Peter Mbae, former Head of the Government Delivery Services, has formally petitioned the International Criminal Court (ICC) for prompt, immediate, and urgent intervention following statements made by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on April 14 regarding the outcome of the 2027 Presidential Election.
The action comes in response to a statement by Murkomen at a public event, declaring that President William Ruto would secure re-election in 2027 under all circumstances.
“We have sent a copy of this letter to the prosecutor of the ICC for prompt, immediate, and urgent interventions by the court to open an investigation on the Kenyan situation to prevent the possibility of a repeat 2007 violence,” the letter reads.
The letter highlights that Murkomen also alluded to the 2007 Presidential election, which resulted in post-election violence.
Mbae added that to address these concerns and specifically to prevent the possibility of a repeat of the 2007 violence, a copy of the letter was sent to the ICC Prosecutor.
The former Head of Government Delivery stated that an investigation commenced by the Court would deter the commission of crimes against humanity
On April 16, Mbae also addressed a letter to the Ministry of Interior condemning the statement, which was aired in the media.
"Attention has been drawn to a statement made by the CS in charge of the Ministry of Interior and National Administration on April 14, which was aired in the media."
"The statement was to the effect that the outcome of the 2027 Presidential Election is predetermined and that President Ruto will win under all circumstances," the letter stated.
In the letter, Mbae demanded confirmation by the Cabinet Secretary that the State shall use all means possible to ensure the 2027 general elections will be free, fair, and transparent.
He also demanded a confirmation in public that the State shall guarantee the citizens a peaceful election period devoid of any violence, suppression, and intimidation
“The only probable conclusion is that the current administration shall employ all means possible to ensure the outcome is as stated by the Cabinet Secretary,” the letter reads.
