Property of unknown value was destroyed on Sunday night following a fire outbreak at Amabuko Secondary School in Kisii County.
The incident, which occurred at around 8pm in Nyaribari Masaba Constituency, left a total of 22 students with minor injuries.
Witnesses reported scenes of panic, with students running and crying for help as the fire engulfed a dormitory within the school.
Ichuni Ward Member of County Assembly Wycliffe Siocha, who responded to the distress call, confirmed that the injured students were rushed to Keroka General Hospital.
However, the cause of the fire remains unclear, with investigations ongoing to establish what triggered the blaze.
''We have had a fire accident at Amabuko Secondary School in my ward. I am grateful that we never lost any students in this incident. A total of 22 students sustained minor injuries, and all of them are currently being attended to at Keroka General Hospital," Siocha confirmed.
''I extend my appreciation to all those who helped put out the fire. I managed to visit the school, assess the damage, and assist in taking the injured to the hospital. I wish the injured a speedy recovery.''
In November 2021, two dormitories were gutted by fire in separate but simultaneous incidents at Amabuko Mixed Day Secondary School and Nyabigena Boys High School, both located in Kisii County.
At Amabuko Secondary School, police confirmed that a dormitory housing 70 students was razed, with property of unknown value destroyed in the blaze.
Meanwhile, the latest incident comes less than a fortnight after a fire razed property of unknown value at Igikiro Boys High School in Makuyu, Murang’a County, on May 10.
Emergency fire services responded in time to prevent the building from being completely razed.
However, no casualties were reported, as no students were inside the dorm at the time of the inferno. However, reports indicated that three students suspected of being involved in the incident were later apprehended.
