The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) disciplinary committee has dismissed the nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba from the party, ostensibly meaning the vocal legislator will lose her seat in Parliament.
In a statement on Monday, May 19, the UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar claimed that the National Executive Committee(NEC) had given a nod to the committee's decision, following a hearing.
Omar claimed that the nominated Senator will no longer be authorised to represent or act on behalf of the party in any capacity.
The SG has further said that the party has nominated Consolata Wabwire Wakwabubi from Kimilili Constituency, Bungoma County, to fill Orwoba's position. Additionally, Omar claims that the party has submitted a letter to the Senate to initiate the process of her removal from Parliament.
"Pursuant to Article 29 of the UDA Party Constitution, and having exhaustively deliberated on the matters before it, the Party's Disciplinary Committee has resolved that Sen. Gloria Orwoba be expelled from the membership of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party with immediate effect," he stated.
"Further, during its meeting held on 19th May 2025, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Party adopted and ratified the Disciplinary Committee's decision. Accordingly, Sen. Gloria Orwoba ceases to be a member of the UDA Party," he added.
A section of UDA leadership was not pleased by her decision to attend the homecoming party of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i earlier this month, which led to officials questioning the senator's loyalty to the party.
Apart from attending the homecoming party of Matiang'i, the party's disciplinary committee chairperson, Charles Njenga, further cited other instances, such as when Orwoba welcomed the former CS in the country and an interview where she reportedly criticised the government’s programmes, as enough grounds for disciplinary action against the Senator.
In his statement today, SG has pointed out that despite the party upholding freedom of expression, her move to 'play for two political teams' contravenes the party's regulations and constitution.
"Fidelity and loyalty to Party ideals are fundamental to its constitution and to further consolidate our multiparty politics by strengthening political parties. Hon. Gloria Orwoba cannot, therefore, continue to play for two political teams simultaneously," he stated.
