ODM leader Raila Odinga has donated five acres to the government to facilitate the Affordable Housing programme.
President William Ruto made the revelation during his tour, ahead of the handing over of several housing units in Kisumu City on Thursday, May 29, 2025, while addressing residents.
According to the Head of State, Raila donated the land to help the government construct houses for low-income earners in the lakeside city.
"I have come with Raila, who has given us his personal land amounting to five acres to construct the affordable houses so that the people of Kisumu City can also benefit," Ruto said.
The Head of State further thanked Raila for his kind gesture towards his flagship project.
Raila urged the people of Kisumu to rally behind President Ruto's administration, stating that the region stands to benefit from the government's development agenda.
Ruto is expected to preside over the commissioning of Phase One of the LAPFUND Makasembo Affordable Housing Project in Kisumu.
Meanwhile, Ruto, who started a three-day visit to the Nyanza region ahead of the Madaraka Day celebration to be held in Homa Bay County, is expected to hand over keys to occupants of the completed 910 housing units.
The government has a target to construct 200,000 affordable housing units annually, aiming to deliver a total of 1 million homes over five years.
As of April 2025, approximately 140,000 units had been completed, with a recent release of 5,000 units attracting over 500,000 interested applicants through the Boma Yangu platform.
Kenyans who want to benefit from this program are encouraged to register through the Boma Yangu platform, save regularly, and stay updated on new housing projects to increase their chances of getting a home when projects are completed.
Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura revealed that those who will have saved longer in the Affordable Housing Programme and have larger families will be prioritised when allocating the homes once the project is complete.
