Police in Kakamega are investigating the death of a man who was allegedly murdered on Tuesday night in Okumu, Kakamega County.
According to residents, the man who was last seen at a local bar was slain late last night and dumped underneath a parked truck along the Okumu-Shamoni road.
The residents accused the security forces of sleeping on the job, saying there have been many violent robberies and murders in the area.
Witnesses say the man shared a meal and went to a local joint for several hours, only to later be found under the truck this morning.
“This young man, we were with him and he ate chips at my place and then went to the bar before he was found dead this morning,” one resident said.
She added, “We are asking the government to install security lights here," one resident recounted.
Another one said, “We need a security light here. This place has become extremely deadly. It is very painful for someone to leave the house, hoping to provide for his family, only to be killed.”
The residents have raised alarms over the Okumu-Shamoni road, which they say has become a no-go zone after dark.
“A lot of people are accosted, beaten up and even maimed along this road; there have been a lot of thefts and killings, and we are asking the government to take action,” said another concerned resident.
Police have collected evidence at the scene as they seek answers on who is responsible for the murder.
The body of the deceased has been moved to the mortuary, awaiting a postmortem.
The incident comes just days after police arrested suspected members of a gang accused of gunning down a Bondeni police officer on Sunday night and injuring two others. The gang ambushed police officers in the Free Area Estate of Nakuru before opening fire and killing the officer.
Cases of violent robberies and murders have been on the rise over the last three months.
