Former Chief Justice David Maraga has officially declared his presidential bid for the 2027 General Elections.
During an interview with NTV on Wednesday night, Maraga declared himself the Gen Z presidential candidate, stressing the need to mentor young people.
"Yes, I am the Gen Z Presidential candidate. I have children, and many people have children. We must mentor young people so that they take over from us," Maraga stated.
While declaring his bid, Maraga noted budgeted graft and police brutality as top agendas in his administration if elected.
“After discussion with friends and after serious reflection, I thought it was time we thought about the leadership of this country. We can not let some people take our country to doomsday literally,” he stated.
“As a result of that reflection, I have made up my mind that I will run for the presidency of this country in 2027,” Maraga asserted.
On the matter of graft, Maraga expressed confidence that he would face it head-on, despite the great likelihood that it would pit him against influential people willing to protect their interests.
The former CJ further noted that he would not require funds to distribute to people in exchange for their votes, as is typically seen in most political circles.
On the contrary, Maraga went on to state that he would appeal to Kenyans to fund his logistical expenses during the campaign trail.
Maraga, while outlining why Kenyans should vote for him, disclosed that he would get a team of professionals in various areas to help him run the country if elected. He added that he would provide leadership that would enable the professionals to do their work, and the country would move forward.
He further added that he would restore the rule of law and ensure everyone, including himself, would follow the Constitution, noting the country was at a point where it needed someone courageous enough to take initiative.
Maraga, by announcing his presidential bid, joins an increasing band of leaders who have thrown their hat in the ring as they seek to unseat President William Ruto, who has remained bullish on his chances to regain the top seat.
The list includes former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya and People's Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua.
