KHRC Demands Release of CCTV Footage of Protests at Parliament Buildings
The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has demanded answers following the disappearance of crucial CCTV footage from within and outside Parliament Buildings during the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests.
On June 25, 2024, Kenya witnessed one of the most dramatic events in its recent political history after thousands of youths flooded the streets. Their demonstration culminated in parts of Parliament being set ablaze and MPs forced to evacuate through underground tunnels.
The response from police and military forces was swift and brutal, with live ammunition, tear gas, and rubber bullets used to disperse the crowds, tragically costing the lives of many young Kenyans.
A year later, the KHRC revealed that Parliament had still not released the CCTV footage showing exactly what happened within and outside its premises.
"Parliament continues to withhold CCTV footage that captured law enforcement officers killing our compatriots on June 25," KHCR revealed.
As the country commemorates the events of that day, the KHCR has renewed its call for the government to release surveillance recordings to ensure that justice is served for victims of the security forces' brutality.
"As we demand justice for our mashujaas, Parliament must release these videos," KHCR said.
In a report by Human Rights Watch, Parliament alleged that the CCTV cameras had malfunctioned on that day.
The findings of the report were also echoed by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, which had attempted to obtain the footage as part of its investigation into the alleged killings during the Gen Z-led protests.
The claims were met with much skepticism from Kenyans and relevant stakeholders who pointed out that this was not the first time authorities cited camera malfunctions in cases involving alleged state violence.
They argued that such explanations have become a convenient pattern whenever the state is implicated in extrajudicial killings or forced disappearances.
KHRC has termed the absence of the footage as a coverup and continues to demand its release.
