A female police officer was seriously injured during an altercation with protesters in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).
As seen on live TV, the officer was among several others who appeared to be fleeing as protesters hurled stones at them.
With the protesters nearly catching up to her, she tripped and fell to the ground, after which the protesters appeared to jump on her and continue the attack.
Kenyans.co.ke has since confirmed that the police officer was rushed to the Kenyatta National Hospital, where she is receiving further treatment.
Images from the aftermath of the attack showed Red Cross personnel and other volunteers helping to rescue and evacuate the officer to hospital.
Activist and Vocal Africa founder Hussein Khalid, who had earlier been seen administering first aid to another injured police officer, was also spotted assisting with the rescue.
The officers reportedly sustained injuries after angry protesters hurled stones at them.
Although the protests in Nairobi’s CBD have been relatively peaceful, the injuries to the two police officers, along with the use of teargas canisters against protesters, suggest otherwise.
Notably, one protester had their hand blown off after attempting to throw back a teargas canister.
In Machakos County, one person was shot dead and eight others were injured after a police officer opened fire on them.
Confirming the incident, the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) revealed that seven individuals sustained serious injuries, three of whom were treated at a private clinic, while four were admitted to Matuu Level 4 Hospital.
The protests were organised countrywide to commemorate the 60 victims of the June 25, 2024, anti-finance protests.
