Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a notice for the temporary closure of a section of Mombasa Road between General Motors Roundabout and the Southern Bypass Interchange at Ole Sereni for one week.
The closure will only affect the Nairobi-bound carriageway.
In a statement on Saturday, June 28, KeNHA Director General Kung'u Ndungu said that the stretch between FUSO(Simba Colt) and the Southern Bypass interchange will be affected. He added that the section of the road will be closed from Saturday, July 5, 2025, to Saturday, July 12, 2025.
The week-long temporary closure is to facilitate essential highway maintenance work along the section.
KeNHA informed heavy vehicles and other motorists heading to the Southern bypass that they will be diverted to the Kyang'ombe exit of the main highway.
"During this period of the road closure, heavy vehicles with a gross weight greater than 3.5 tons and other motorists heading to the Southern Bypass will be diverted to exit the main highway at Kyang'ombe Slip Road,” KeNHA stated.
The authority added that other vehicles will use a single lane, which will be provided along the affected section.
“They will use old Mombasa Road, while other vehicles will utilise a single lane that will be provided along the affected section,” he added.
Motorists are, however, urged to exercise caution around the work areas and follow the proposed traffic management plan.
“Follow the proposed traffic management plan herein and cooperate with the police and traffic marshal on the site,” the notice reads.
This section of the A8 road forms part of the Trans-Africa Highway, where it connects Mombasa to inland towns in Kenya, to the Ugandan border and on to Lagos, Nigeria.
Earlier, KeNHA had also informed motorists of a 45-day traffic disruption at the Gitaru interchange, which connects Waiyaki Way with the Southern and Western Bypasses from June 28 to August 11, 2025.
