Suna West Member of Parliament Peter Masara is in mourning after the loss of his son.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Masara's party, confirmed the news on Monday, June 30, with a condolence message.
"We commiserate with Hon. Peter Masara, MP for Suna West, for the loss of his beloved son Hillary," ODM said in a statement.
The statement went on, "We pray for Mheshimiwa and his family to have God’s grace, strength and fortitude in this difficult time of grief."
News of Masara's bereavement initially hit the internet on Sunday, when the lawmaker's constituents began sharing the news on social media along with condolence messages.
While details of how the MP's son lost his life remain scanty, there are suggestions that the death of his son was, in many ways, sudden.
This was the latest bereavement to hit the ODM party, which has had to deal with several high-profile deaths of leaders or their kin.
On June 14, Kilifi governor Gideon Mung'aro announced the loss of his dad, which coincidentally happened when the world was celebrating Father's Day.
Ong’ondo was gunned down on April 30 as he was leaving parliament, while Injendi passed away on February 17, after weeks of hospitalisation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
As far as Masara's family is concerned, details of the lawmaker's personal life have mostly been kept private. However, in 2020, the lawmaker was plunged into mourning after his brother was found dead in his apartment in Oruba village in Suna West Sub County.
At the time, amid uncertainty surrounding the brother's death, it was revealed that he was suffering from tuberculosis in the days leading up to his demise.
Meanwhile, Masara is largely admired in his constituency, and a recent report ranked him as one of the best-performing lawmakers in the country.
