Senior Advisor in the Council of Economic Advisors, Moses Kuria, on Monday, June 30, doubled down on his claims that there will be no elections come 2027.

Kuria sparked debate with a scathing response to Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who was adamant that elections should proceed within the next two years, as required in the constitution.

The former Gatundu South lawmaker, in his response on X, formerly Twitter, told off Kalonzo, saying that elections were unlikely to proceed as planned because of a myriad of legal and institutional hurdles.

“This morning, I listened to my friend Kalonzo Musyoka on Kameme FM. SKM questioned my statement that there will be no election in 2027,” Kuria said.

“The swearing-in of IEBC Commissioners has been stopped by the court. In another 39 days, we will start the 24-month countdown to the 2027 elections.”

On Monday, Kalonzo spoke on Kameme FM, where he reiterated the opposition's stance on taking down President William Ruto's regime come 2027.

Despite faulting the recent appointments of new commissioners and a chairperson for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Kalonzo insisted the opposition would have to work with what was at their disposal for now, as long as elections were free and fair.

"They are rushing the NADCO report, which had specific recommendations. We are the opposition, and we were not consulted. That is why we are calling it the William Ruto Commission," Kalonzo said. "Regardless, a William Ruto Commission is better than no commission. And the elections must be free and fair."

But Moses Kuria, in his rejoinder, to recommendations by the Kriegler Commission, which investigated the disputed 2007 election. The Senior Advisor in the Council of Economic Advisors insisted that the fact that the reconstitution of the IEBC has been severely delayed has narrowed down the odds of an election taking place.

“Kriegler told us that there cannot be a free and fair election if we don’t have a Commission two years before the election,” Kuria noted.

He further predicted that, based on past cases involving the IEBC, the numerous court cases hampering the reconstitution of the IEBC may well drag on until 2027.

In the absence of an election, the current administration would have to remain in power until all the legal issues are resolved.

Kuria ended his online analysis with a jab at Kalonzo, a senior counsel, as he accused the Wiper Party leader of dishonesty, since, by assumption, the Wiper Party leader should know all legal implications of failure to reconstitute a commission on time.
