Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has once again elicited a public uproar after accusing Standard Media Group of inciting the Sunday goons' attack on Kenyan mothers for a catchy headline.
The MP alluded that only the media, specifically the Standard, would benefit from the chaos witnessed during the planned press briefing that the Kenyan mothers had arranged at the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) offices in Nairobi.
Although she denounced the attack, Passaris called out former Chief Justice David Maraga for accusing President William Ruto's administration of deploying the goons.
She claimed that the President had better, more important national duties to attend to, and if the presser had been a genuine threat, then he would have sent police officers to deal with it, not goons.
"So the real question is, who is benefiting from such chaos? Look at the headlines. Standard Group got the scoop," she stated.
"They had a photographer in place, the narrative ready, and the sensational angle tied up. Could the chaos have been orchestrated for the headline?"
She further called for a reevaluation of the role of media in general, claiming that the line of reporting and news manufacturing must be made clear.
On Sunday afternoon, armed goons barged into the KHRC offices and dispersed the mothers who had gathered for the presser, accusing them of planning the Saba Saba protests.
The goons also attacked and robbed the journalists present for the press briefing, taking off with at least two laptops and a phone belonging to the members of the Fourth Estate.
Videos shared by KHRC showed the moment the goons forcefully barged through the gates, causing those present to flee.
A source that spoke to Kenyans.co.ke confirmed that some had resorted to hiding in nearby businesses to evade the attack.
On the front page of The Standard's July 7 issue, the publication highlighted the plight of the mothers who had called for a cessation of the infliction of violence on their sons during protests. The headline simply read, "Don't Kill Our Sons".
