Angry Nyamira residents torched the Itibo Police Station after a student was reportedly fatally shot by a police officer on Tuesday, July 9.
According to reports, the student at Nyamira National Polytechnic was among the protesters who demonstrated over poor infrastructure, including roads and security lights in the area.
The shooting at Itibo Market angered demonstrators who retaliated by setting the local police station on fire.
In an photo seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the police station was reduced to ashes, and an unknown value of property destroyed.
Details about the student's identity and the circumstances of the shooting, or the event leading to the confrontation still remain unclear.
This event echoes similar occurrences such as the destruction and burning of Mawego police station during Albert Ojwang's funeral procession.
Ndunyu Njeru Police Station in Nyandarua County was also torched on June 26, following another police related shooting.
On July 3, Mawego Police Station was torched by a mob that had carried Ojwang's body to the station. Ojwang was first booked at the station before he was arrested on June 7 before being taken to Central Police station.
The residents were seen running and singing dirges, where it is reportedly that this exercise is carried out to ward off evil spirits that might disturb his peace.
The running and singing dirges later turned into chaos, resulting in demonstrations and setting fire to the stations.
On June 27, the Ndunyu Njeru Police Station was torched by a mob that claimed that the police had shot and killed a man during a violent protest in Nyandarua County.
The police in the area confirmed that the locals torched the station after a man was fatally shot during a protest against cattle theft.
It was reported that the demonstrators turned violent and later attacked police officers who were trying to control the protest, prompting to fatal shooting.
