Several people are feared to have died following a grisly road accident involving multiple vehicles in Kijauri Town, Borabu Constituency, Nyamira County.

At least five people are reported to have lost their lives in the tragic crash, which occurred on the afternoon of Friday, July 11, with others believed to have sustained injuries.

While the exact cause of the accident remains unclear, preliminary reports indicate that the crash happened after a lorry, reportedly overloaded with timber, veered off a steep section of the road and collided with a matatu and a private car.

Although local law enforcement is yet to confirm the number of casualties, images from the scene showed the mangled wreckage of the lorry and the private car, with the matatu also sustaining significant damage.

Emergency response teams rushed to the scene, and investigations into the cause of the accident are currently ongoing.

Further images of the accident indicate that the crash occurred near a local shopping centre, with pictures showing destroyed shops and the storage area of the lorry hanging next to a wall.

It is believed some of the casualties were those who were stationed at the shopping centre, although this is yet to be confirmed.

The Kisii-Sotik highway is known to be a black spot with several accidents known to have occurred along the busy road.

On the evening of Monday, April 7, a fatal road accident between a trailer and a Subaru resulted in the deaths of two people and left three others injured at Bobaracho on the Kisii-Sotik highway.

The accident, which was a head-on collision, occurred when the Subaru lost control and veered onto the path of the trailer, which was headed from Kisii to Keroka.

The crash was confirmed by Kisii County Police Commander Ronald Kirui: “The driver of the Subaru failed to keep to his lane and collided head-on with the oncoming trailer.”

The accident on the killer highway came hot on the heels of a grisly crash on Saturday, April 5, where at least 13 people died, while 11 others were left nursing serious injuries in an accident involving three vehicles.
