Former Chief Justice David Maraga has revealed that the bulk of his Presidential campaign funding will rely on the goodwill of Kenyans.

Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV, Maraga asserted that although the actual campaign budget had yet to be determined, the plan was to have Kenyans donate to it, making it an administration brought to power by ordinary citizens.

“The details are being worked out since we will require quite a substantial amount of money. My people are working on the likely budget,” he stated.

“But I am convinced we are going to appeal to Kenyans to contribute to our campaign, and it is going to succeed. The Kenyans will, themselves, fund this election, and once we are funded and get elected, you can rest assured that no one will arm-twist us as this is a Wanjiku government.”

However, he clarified that he would be putting in what he described as a relatively small amount of money, between Ksh1 million and Ksh2 million, into the campaign.

Due to the high cost of living plaguing ordinary Kenyans, he revealed that they would not be expected to contribute much to the cause, claiming that several Kenyans had already shown interest in starting the contributions.

He further expressed confidence that there would be no funding gap, based on the responses he had been receiving from supporters across the country.

“The people we are talking to, and some that we are meeting, keep asking when we will be setting up the Paybill,” he said. “We are not asking for a lot of money from individuals. We will leave it open. With the suffering Kenyans are going through, we can assure you that getting Ksh10 or Ksh20 from individuals will happen.”

The former CJ revealed that his team was even projecting a surplus of these donations, which he said would be put towards a public cause.

Maraga is among several presidential aspirants who have expressed interest in throwing their hats in the ring to unseat President William Ruto in the 2027 General Elections.

Speaking at the interview, Maraga also faulted Parliament for failing to impeach the President thus far despite his track record of violating the Constitution. According to Maraga, the House should have already started the process to kick him out.

“Parliament has the power to impeach the President. He has violated countless provisions of the Constitution,” Maraga said, “If Parliament were doing its work, the President would not be in office today."
