Democratic Congress Party(DCP) Nairobi Patron Irungu Nyakera has questioned President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s push for the use of national ID cards instead of the official voter register in the 2027 general election.
In a statement on Tuesday, July 29, Nyakera accused the two leaders of collaborating to rig the upcoming elections.
He claimed that the shift from the official register to ID cards alone was part of a larger plan to influence the outcome of the vote.
“The sudden push to use ID cards instead of the voter register is a well-coordinated narrative by Ruto and Raila to steal the 2027 elections,” Nyakera claimed.
Nyakera, in the statement, highlighted a series of events that he believes are proof of Ruto and Raila's plans.
He noted that just last week, it was announced that 400,000 people in Turkana would be issued with ID cards.
The week before that, he said, John Mbadi, the Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury and Economic Planning, called for a door-to-door campaign in Luo Nyanza to encourage people to register for ID cards.
Nyakera also pointed out that, earlier this year, Ruto lifted a ban on ID vetting in northern Kenya shortly after it was projected that the region could register 3.5 million new voters.
Nyakera claimed that Raila is now asking the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to stop using the official voter register and rely only on ID cards during voting.
He also sensationally claimed that there is a secret team working to prevent youths from the GEMA community (Gikuyu, Embu, Meru) from getting IDs and registering as voters.
"Meanwhile, I have received credible intelligence on a clandestine 135-member team that has been deployed to suppress GEMA youth from obtaining IDs and registering to vote. I have already shared this information with the United Opposition leadership."
“Fellow Kenyans, let us not sleep through this calculated plan to deny us our democratic right to vote out this government. And to those working in registration and ID departments: do not allow yourselves to be used to turn wantam into tutam. Kenyans are watching,” Nyakera said.
