The National Land Commission (NLC) has announced that it is in the process of acquiring more than 105 parcels from landowners in several counties to pave the way for road projects across the country.
In a gazette notice dated August 1, the commission's chairman, Gershom Otachi, said that the acquisition is being done on behalf of the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA).
According to Otachi, the commission is acquiring parcels of land from five individuals in Busia County to facilitate the construction of the River Sio bridge and approach roads, as well as the Amakura-Nambale Road in Busia County.
The commission has also confirmed that it is acquiring land for the construction of the Mervy-Njeri Junction (B5)-Mangu (Junction D317)-Rongai (Junction D318) road project from 11 individuals in Nakuru County.
Affected individuals will be required to visit the Rongai chief's office on August 27 and 28 for a claim hearing.
Otachi further revealed that the commission is in the process of acquiring 3 hectares of land from four landowners for the construction of the Baricho Bridge and Approach road in Kilifi County. Affected landlords will be required to visit the Baricho Assistant Chiefs' office on September 10 for claims.
NLC is also in the process of acquiring parcels of land from 12 individuals in Kiambu County for the construction of the Gatundu–Karinga–Flyover Road Project. Additionally, a total of eight parcels of land will be acquired in the same county for the construction of the Gatundu-Karinga flyover road project.
In Tharaka Nithi County, the commission is set to acquire 46 parcels of land for the establishment of St. Mary's–Kinooro, access to Igoji TTC, Gianchuku-Mbogori Roads Project in Tharaka Nithi County. Affected landlords will be required to visit the Chogoria Chief's office between 20 and 21 August for a claim hearing.
The government will also acquire one parcel of land in Laikipia County for the construction of Lamuria Ngobit–Withare–Junction B5, Junction B5 (Solio)–Lamuria, and Junction B5 (Gatemu)–Ngobit Girls' High School–Kihara Primary School Road in Laikipia County.
NLC will also acquire 12 parcels of land in Kirinyaga County for the construction of PIAI – Murinduko -Kiumbuini –Mutithi, Sagana–Kithaka–Thiguku, and Kutus – Kimbimbi – Togonye roads.
The commission also intends to acquire five parcels of land in Kiambu County for the rehabilitation of the International School of Kenya-Gathiga road project. Affected landowners have been advised to visit the Gathiga chief's office on August 19 for claims.
According to NLC, all individuals affected will be required to submit a written claim for compensation to NLC offices, accompanied by other documents such as ID, land ownership documents, and bank account details.
Furthermore, the commission has noted that companies with an ownership interest will be required to table certificates of incorporation, CR12 forms, KRA PINs, and ID documents for directors.
"Every person interested in the affected land is required to deliver to the National Land Commission on or before the day of the inquiry a written claim to compensation, a copy of their identity card (ID), Personal Identification Number (PIN), land ownership documents, and bank account details," NLC stated.
