The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers have summoned Democracy for the Citizens Party Deputy Leader, Cleophas Malala, over a helicopter incident.
Malala was summoned to appear before the DCI offices in Kakamega on Friday, August 8, to shed more light on his decision to land using a helicopter at the centre of a stadium during school games.
According to Western region police commander Issa Muhamoud, Malala's move to land on the Mumias Sports complex stadium during the national secondary school game final endangered the lives of people who were attending the games.
While calling on the DCP deputy leader to honour the summons, the police boss warned of dire consequences, including criminal charges, should Malala and the pilot be found guilty of an unauthorised landing.
In particular, Muhamoud noted that the police would probe potential endangering of public safety, trespass on public land and violation of aviation regulations by the helicopter occupants.
"I call upon former Kakamega Senator, Cleophas Malala, to report to the DCI offices before Friday, so that he can make his statement as we go ahead with the investigations," said Muhamoud.
"Therefore, the pilot, the politician and any other accomplices involved in this unauthorised landing will face criminal charges," the police boss added.
The helicopter reportedly landed during halftime of a match between Musingu High School and St Joseph's Kitale, causing panic among students, teachers and the residents.
Nonetheless, this is not the first time the former Kakamega Senator has been summoned by the DCI. In May this year, he was also summoned in regard to a chaotic political event in Western Kenya.
The summon followed a clash between Kakamega residents and police officers, an incident which led to the impounding of Malala's three vehicles.
While issuing the summons, the Western region police boss directed the DCP principal to report to the DCI within the next 72 hours to record a statement, with the police accusing the politician of prior notice about the rally.
Meanwhile, despite the latest summons, Malala who is currently one of President Ruto's greatest political critics, has yet to respond on the matter.
