The Members of Kericho County Assembly have once again filed a motion to impeach embattled Governor Erick Mutai, barely a year after he survived another impeachment attempt.
In an official statement addressed to the County's clerk and dated August 6, Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony notified the clerk to receive the motion for the governor's impeachment.
"Kindly find attached the following documents for your action: Proposed motion for the removal by impeachment of Dr. Erick Mutalas, Kericho County Governor, Evidence in support of the said proposed motion; and Signed list of Members in support of the proposed Motion," the letter reads in part.
In his motion, the MCA indicated that he had attached documents to support the impeachment motion, including evidence in support of the motion, a signed list of MCAs supporting the motion, and the proposed motion for the removal of the governor.
In handwritten notes, Kericho County Assembly Speaker Patrick Mutai confirmed that the motion complied with Standing Order No. 70, which outlined the procedure for the impeachment of a county chief.
On his part, the county clerk further directed the motion to be scheduled by the Assembly Business Committee for tabling and debate. This will be the second time the MCAs are attempting to remove the governor from power.
The motion tabling came hours after reports alleged that the governor had a night meeting on Tuesday, trying to convince his COs and CECs to stand by him.
It is alleged that the governor sought the support of the COs and CECs after the county chiefs threatened to abandon him to challenge the looming impeachment on his own.
The COs and the CECs reportedly told Governor Mutai at the crisis meeting allegedly held at a hotel in Awasi, Kisumu county, that they would not be supporting him this time around.
Reports alleged that the COs and CECs had raised money to help the embattled county boss buy his way out of the looming impeachment, funds that they alleged he misused.
In the previous impeachment, 31 County MCAs passed the motion to axe the county boss, but he was saved after 34 senators voted to discontinue the hearing against 10 voted in support.
In the then motion, the Governor had been accused of gross violation of the Constitution and other laws, including misappropriation, misallocation, and unlawful drawings of county revenue and county finances, and misappropriation and/or abetting misappropriation of publicly raised funds.
