An unknown number of students were injured on Friday morning following a road accident involving a bus carrying students and teachers from Salvation Army Imusutsu High School along the Kisumu-Busia highway in Sirwa Posta, Vihiga County.

The accident occurred at around 7 am and took place after the bus, which was carrying students and teachers, lost control and overturned at the side of the road.

Reports suggest the bus was transporting the students and teachers from Vihiga County to Meru for the Kenya National Music Festival.

The two-week event, which officially commenced on Monday, August 4, features students from schools across the country under the theme, "Enhancing the Creative Economy through Artistic Expression."

Footage of the accident showed the bus upside down with a broken windscreen, windows and damaged seats, depicting the extent of the damage.

Following the accident, a rescue team made up mainly of residents quickly arrived at the scene and began removing those trapped inside the wreckage.

The police arrived moments later, according to reports, and cordoned off the scene before assessing the situation, which had begun attracting crowds.

The exact number of those injured is yet to be established.

The latest incident adds to the number of road accidents witnessed in the country over the past month. It comes just hours after eight other people died in a separate road crash in the Monderat area of Naivasha, Nakuru County.

The Nakuru accident occurred on the evening of Thursday, August 7, involving a freight train and a company bus that collided at a level crossing, killing the 8 people on the spot.

According to the report, the bus was ferrying the company workers who were coming from a morning shift. The train struck the bus and dragged it over 200 metres.

Barely two days ago, in a separate incident, a fully loaded matatu overturned on Waiyaki Way in Westlands, Nairobi, resulting in a traffic snarl-up during the morning rush hour.

The police reported that there were no fatalities in the accident. However, several people were injured. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
