Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o has called on the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) to urgently reconstruct and redesign a section of the road in Mamboleo following a tragic bus accident that killed 25 people.

On August 9, Nyong'o released a statement urging KeNHA to redesign the black spot at the Coptic Roundabout where the crash occurred.

"I am urging the Kenya National Highway Authority(KeNHA) to urgently redesign the Kisumu-Kakamega highway. Please donate blood to help the victims," the governor said.

An information desk at JOOTRH is operating 24/7 to assist affected families.

"I have visited Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) following the tragic accident at the Coptic roundabout. Medical teams are working tirelessly to treat the 26 survivors," he added.

In his speech, Nyong'o consoled the bereaved, stating that his office is working with the relevant authorities to provide any requisite support.

"On behalf of the County Government of Kisumu, we condole with the bereaved and offer our prayers to those who sustained injuries and continue to receive medical attention at different facilities. We stand with the people of Nyakach and Nyahura during this trying moment.”

“My Office is working with all relevant authorities to provide any requisite support at the moment as we continue to urge for caution on our roads and by the road as we urge caution on our roads," he added.

Several other leaders have joined the governor in offering condolences to the families who lost loved ones. Among them was Governor Gladys Wanga of Homa Bay, who stood with Nyong’o in consoling the accident victims.

Wanga expressed her solidarity with the bereaved families and wished the injured a quick recovery.

“Governor Prof. of Homa Bay, I stand in solidarity with my brother, Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o. While this tragedy did not occur in Homa Bay, grief knows no borders, and we are united in sorrow,” she said.

So far, the death toll from Friday evening's accident has reached 26 after one person with serious injuries succumbed on Saturday, August 9.

County Executive Committee Member Gregory Ganda confirmed the update, adding that other injured patients are reportedly being treated in the hospital's operating theatres as staff work to ensure everyone receives medical attention.
