Traffic came to a standstill at Witeithie along Thika Road following a tragic accident near Mang'u High School on Saturday, August 9.

A lorry reportedly slipped after hitting a stone and struck a boda boda rider, killing him instantly.

In protest, angry boda boda riders blocked the road, causing a major jam from Njomoko to Witeithie on the Nairobi-bound lane.

An image obtained by Kenyans.co.ke shows the riders carrying their fallen colleague’s body away from the scene.

The authorities responded to the incident immediately. The rescue team managed to restore traffic after the highway was unblocked.

According to the report, the boda boda rider's body was taken to a nearby mortuary.

This latest incident adds to a series of recent fatal accidents in Kenya. Just a few hours earlier on Saturday, August 9, several people were feared dead after a matatu and a lorry were involved in a head-on collision at the Korompoi area on Namanga Road in Kajiado County.

According to authorities, at least seven people were killed in the crash on the Isinya-Namanga Highway, bringing the total number of individuals who have died in fatal accidents reported this month to 50.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has expressed alarm over the rising number of fatalities on Kenyan roads and urged motorists to exercise caution when driving.

The NTSA attributes many of the accidents to human error, including speeding, improper overtaking, and lane indiscipline, and has launched a new National Road Safety Action Plan to curb the rising toll.

The authority, on June 19, introduced rules aimed at improving road safety.NTSA introduced mandatory inspections for all vehicles over four years old, as well as all commercial, school, and public service vehicles.

It also introduced mandatory seat belts and fire extinguishers in all vehicles. Drivers are warned of the legal framework against drunk driving by specifying legal alcohol limits, authorising testing with breathalysers and other samples, and introducing penalties for non-compliance.
