Machakos County is set to be one of Kenya's beacons of sports excellence after Governor Wavinya Ndeti announced the construction of the Machakos Sports Complex Aquatic Centre, a world-class sports stadium.
Taking to an official statement on X, the governor revealed that the ambitious projects have already begun, with phase one construction of an Olympic-size swimming pool ongoing.
"I am proud to lead the transformation of sports in our county through the construction of a world-class Sports Complex. This will be more than just a facility; it will be a landmark of pride and progress for our people," Wavinya announced.
According to the governor, the Olympic-sized swimming pool is among the many world-class features the stadium will have. The pool is designed to meet international standards for competitive swimming while also serving the community.
In addition to the pool, the complex will feature a modern indoor sports arena capable of hosting year-round games and training sessions.
This facility will cater to basketball, volleyball, badminton, and other indoor sports, offering athletes a professional environment in which to hone their skills.
A multipurpose stadium will also be built, designed to accommodate football matches, athletics competitions, and large-scale cultural events.
With seating capacity and amenities tailored for national-level tournaments, the governor revealed that the stadium is expected to attract visitors and participants from across the country and worldwide.
"It will open doors for talented athletes to train, compete, and shine at the highest levels. It will inspire healthy lifestyles, create safe spaces for engagement, and keep our young people focused on their dreams," the governor reiterated.
According to the governor, the stadium will offer other benefits apart from the sports aspect, including boosting the local economy and creating opportunities for traders, service providers, and hoteliers.
The stadium also promises to bring more jobs to the residents of Machakos County, both during the construction phase and in its long-term operations.
Reacting to the revelations, Kenyans congratulated the governor for the initiative, challenging other governors to follow suit and construct such stadiums in their various counties.
