A police officer was arrested after he reportedly lost his firearm during a night out in Kehancha Township in Migori County.

According to a police report filed at Kehancha Police Station, the officer is from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kuria West.

The report indicated that, on the night of August 9, the officer went to a local bar located approximately two kilometres south of the police station in the company of a woman at around 9 pm.

"That on the night of 09/8/2025, at about 2100 Hours, he went to a bar within Kehancha Township, about 2km South of the Station, in the company of a Gusii Female Lady Aged 32 Years, where they started having drinks," the statement reads.

At around 4am, the corporal realised that his Duma pistol, loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition, was missing.

According to the report, he only noticed the pistol was missing once the woman he had been with had already left the premises.

“While still in the same bar at around 0400 Hours, he realized that his Pistol Make Duma Serial No. D04240243, Loaded With 15 Rounds of ammunition, was missing.

"The lady whom she was with had also left. All efforts to recover the said firearm are underway,” part of the police report reads.

The woman has also been arrested and is being held at Kehancha Police Station while the police investigate the case.

There have been cases where police officers' firearms have been stolen due to negligence. This includes instances of officers losing their weapons while on duty or being disarmed by criminals.

Another incident occurred at Dagoretti Police Station, where four firearms and ammunition were stolen by individuals described as protesters.

While some of these firearms were later recovered and the suspects were arrested, the incident highlighted the vulnerability of police armouries and the potential for official weapons to fall into the wrong hands.
