Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service (DIG-KPS), Eliud Lagat, on Thursday, August 14, made an impromptu visit to Mwingi and Matuu Police Stations in Kitui and Machakos Counties, respectively.
In an official statement by the National Police Service, the DIG was visiting to assess the working conditions of officers in different regions when he stopped at the police stations.
During the visit, Lagat hailed the officers for their diligent work, professionalism, and commitment to public service.
Lagat toured key sections of the stations, including the Report Office, Children and Gender Office, Cells, Anti-Crime Unit, DCI Offices, Traffic Office, and Police Lines, engaging directly with officers on duty.
The visit to the stations comes at a time when the DIG has been under high scrutiny following the killing of teacher and social media influencer Albert Ojwang, who passed on in custody at Nairobi’s Central Police Station on June 7.
The DIG had been implicated in Ojwang’s case after the blogger had allegedly posted defamatory content about him on social media, which allegedly led Lagat to file a formal complaint against him.
Following this complaint, Ojwang was apprehended and later passed away in police custody under suspicious circumstances. Lagat, however, denied any involvement in the apprehension, torture, or killing.
Although he stepped down from his post to allow for further investigations, civil societies, rights groups, and a section of leaders called for his apprehension.
Lagat resumed his duties on July 14, after being cleared of direct involvement in the incident by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
During the impromptu visit on Thursday, Lagat emphasised the importance of mental health awareness, improving officers’ welfare, and upholding integrity among police officers.
He advised the officers to maintain high levels of discipline, teamwork, and professionalism while demonstrating humanity in their duties.
Lately, police stations have also been in the spotlight, especially after cases of custody killings. Kenyans staged protests, burning some of them in retaliation.
