A Kenyan delegation has met with Haiti's new transitional presidential council head, Laurent Saint-Cyr, to review the progress of the UN-backed Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission.

Led by Deputy National Security Adviser Joseph Boinnet and Kenya’s Consul General to Haiti, Noor Gabow, the team met with Saint-Cyr in Port-au-Prince. He expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing operations against criminal gangs being carried out by the mission.

The visit, which served as a crucial review mission, aimed to assess the performance of the 800 Kenyan police officers who are spearheading the international effort to restore order in the Caribbean nation.

The Kenyan deployment is the first component of a larger mission designed to support the Haitian National Police in stabilising the country and protecting critical infrastructure from armed groups.

During the meeting, the delegation, which included the head of the MSS mission, Godfrey Otunge, discussed key operational strategies and logistics.

The talks focused on enhancing collaboration and ensuring the mission's objectives are met under Haiti’s new leadership.

A statement from Saint-Cyr’s office revealed that both countries will continue working together amid proposals to continue the mission.

“Both parties agreed to continue advocating for increased support in equipment and logistical resources for the MMAS, as well as to pursue discussions on the future of the mission, including ongoing proposals with the UN and the OAS,” the statement read in part.

Plans are underway to deploy more officers, with the UN set to discuss the mission's mandate next month.

The meeting also discussed the upcoming opening of the Kenyan consulate to the Caribbean country.

“They praised the hospitality and collaboration of the Haitian authorities, highlighting the upcoming opening of the Kenyan Consulate as a significant milestone in strengthening bilateral relations,” the statement added.

The Kenyan officers, who were deployed on June 25, 2024, have been conducting round-the-clock patrols and reinforcing security around key areas in the capital.

Laurent Saint-Cyr’s appointment marked the first time members of Haiti’s private sector held both the rotating presidency and prime minister posts. He is working alongside Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé.
