The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of moderate to heavy rain in several parts of the country beginning this Friday to next week on Tuesday.
In its latest 5-day weather advisory released on Friday, August 15, Kenya Met said rains were expected in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley and North-western Kenya.
According to the weatherman, heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms were likely to occur in the aforementioned regions during the second half of the forecast period.
In the Highland East region, counties that were projected to receive rain include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi.
Likewise, in the West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, rains were expected in the counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo and Uasin Gishu.
A similar weather pattern was forecasted in Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot.
While most parts of the country were expected to experience intense rains, Kenya Met predicted light showers in the South Eastern Lowland Counties of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta as well as inland parts of Tana River County.
The coastal and North eastern counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo were also projected to receive light rains.
Temperature Advisory
The weather department also noted a likelihood of very cold weather in the next five days, particularly in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands and the Rift Valley.
Residents living in the aforementioned regions were cautioned to brace for low temperatures of up to 7°C for the first two days of the forecast, before later rising to 9°C for the remaining days.
"Intermittent cold and cloudy conditions are likely to occur over some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands and the Rift Valley," Kenya Met announced.
It further warned of strong south-easterly winds with speeds exceeding 12.86 metres per second over the Coast, the South-eastern lowlands, North-eastern and North-western Kenya.
