The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has dispatched a team to inspect the Coptic roundabout located along the Kisumu-Kakamega highway.

This follows an incident where a group of unknown people reportedly dug out the roundabout following the surging cases of road accidents along the section of the highway.

Moments after the incident, KeNHA sent a team of engineers to redesign the roundabout in a move aimed at stopping the persistent road carnage.

Images of the roundabout obtained by Kenyans.co.ke showed the section of the road covered in a mountain of mud, scattered debris and wreckage of a road sign that had been placed along the road.

The footage further depicted the section of the road partially blocked by the wet mud, with motorists forced to manoeuvre through the debris.

The intersection has long been a black spot, with numerous accidents reported over recent years, prompting calls for urgent intervention by the government.

The latest case involves the death of 27 people who passed away after a school bus ferrying mourners from a funeral crashed, killing several people on the spot.

According to the probe, the driver of the bus lost control and veered off the road before overturning into a ditch. The accident killed 21 people on the spot, while others succumbed while receiving treatment.

The accident occurred at the roundabout, which is located metres from Kisumu city, and it involved a bus belonging to Naki High School in Nyakach subcounty.

Following the accident, Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o called for an urgent redesign of the roundabout. Speaking on August 10, the governor argued that the repeated accidents on the section of the road were caused by its dangerous slope.

He revealed that he had already contacted the national government for the revamping of the deadly roundabout, warning that delays in redesigning the section of the road would continue to be a death trap.

To support the affected families, the governor donated Ksh1 million. "The bank details and account number will be published in tomorrow's papers for anyone who wishes to contribute to the fundraising effort," he said.
