The Kenya Railways Corporation has cautioned members of the public against the dangerous practice of driving vehicles along the railway line.

In a notice issued on Saturday, August 30, the Corporation noted that such a practice poses a serious risk to the safety of motorists, passengers, and train operations.

According to Kenya Railways, the behaviour of driving along railway lines could also result in severe accidents, damage to property, injury, or loss of life.

"We remind all road users that railway lines and reserves are strictly designated for train operations only," the Corporation urged members of the public.

The Corporation, in its notice to motorists, warned that unauthorised driving or parking along the railway track could potentially attract legal consequences for offenders.

"For your safety and that of others, Kenya Railways called on Kenyans to stop driving or walking along the railway track. "Cross the railway line only at designated level crossings," the agency stated.

"Always adhere to road and rail safety rules. Your cooperation will help us keep our railways safe for all," Kenya Railways added.

While train accidents are rare because they operate on dedicated fixed tracks, they sometimes experience accidents, mainly caused by either operator error that results in a crash or mechanical problems.

The warning comes on the back of a fatal accident three weeks ago, where at least eight people died following a crash involving a freight train and a company bus.

The accident, which occurred on Thursday, August 7, took place at the Morendat Junction in Naivasha after a train collided with a bus ferrying Kenya Pipeline Company employees.

According to witnesses, the train struck the bus and dragged it over 200 metres, killing the eight victims on the spot and leaving several others nursing critical injuries.

Moments after the accident, Kenya Railways released a press statement, terming the crash as unfortunate but reiterated the need for members of the public to exercise vigilance while approaching railway crossings.
