Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Righathi Gachagua has warned the public against purchasing 2,000 affordable housing units in Ong'ata Rongai, saying they risked being evicted in the next few years.
Gachagua spoke at a Sunday Service at St Peter's ACK Cathedral in Ong'ata Rongai, where he alleged there was a plot by the government to forcefully claim a 152-acre piece of land belonging to the church.
According to Gachagua, the said piece of land was the one being used for the construction of affordable housing by President William Ruto's regime.
"Those houses that are being built are not affordable housing. They are commercial houses. We want to be kind to investors who want to buy those 2,000 houses in advance. Don't waste your money," Gachagua warned.
The former Deputy President proceeded to outline plans to evict anyone who purchased the affordable housing units in Rongai once he got into power in 2027.
He went on, "We are going to have elections in 2027. There will be a new government. If we find the land was forcibly taken by the government, once we are in power, we will return it to the church."
"If you bought the houses, you will incur losses because PCEA will take those houses and collect their rent."
Gachagua also took a swipe at the government over alleged misplaced priorities, saying the larger Ong'ata Rongai, Kiserian and Ngong areas' main challenges were related to water, not housing.
"I want to ask the government to listen to the people of Kiserian and Ngong. The challenge of the people of these areas is not houses. The challenge is water and sewerage," he said.
As part of the government's affordable housing initiative, the Gataka area located near the Oloolaiser water plant within Ongata Rongai was singled out as a prime area for affordable housing, offering various unit types, including studios and one, two, and three-bedroom apartments through the Boma Yangu project.
In July 2025, Don Kagicha, the Regional Director of Nairobi Metropolitan, confirmed the Ksh5.2 billion project would have 2,000 units.
Kagicha, however, stated that before the start of the housing project, priority would be given to schools in the surrounding area through the establishment of social amenities.
Since the project would be near the Oloolaiser Water Plant, the government also revealed plans to construct three boreholes and have a sewer system to support the project.
