Traffic was temporarily disrupted along Thika Superhighway after a bus attached to the Super Metro Sacco was set ablaze along the busy highway.
In images obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, the bus was completely engulfed in flames as a crowd watched in anticipation on the afternoon of Monday, September 1.
Initial reports suggest that after the bus allegedly killed a boda boda rider by knocking him down, angry operators descended upon it.
The bus was burnt beyond reasonable repair, but there were no reports of any further injuries from the incident.
Moments before the incident, reports were rife on social media from users purporting to be at the scene, calling for help, alleging the bus was on the verge of being torched by unnamed people.
It remains unclear whether there were passengers aboard the bus at the time of the incident.
In the aftermath of the incident, there was a huge traffic buildup from the Burudani area, where the accident reportedly took place, towards Juja Town.
There are also indications that the collision occurred at one of the exits, away from the superhighway, as videos of the motorcycle involved in the accident suggest it was using the exit.
This is the second incident in less than a month where boda boda operators have taken matters into their own hands following the death of one of their own, coming just weeks after a City Shuttle bus was set ablaze along Jogoo Road on August 7.
According to witnesses, the operator sustained fatal injuries upon impact. Following the incident, passengers were forced to leave the bus and find alternative transport, as the bus driver and conductor waited for the authorities to take control of the situation.
However, moments later, more boda boda operators gathered at the scene before they took matters into their own hands.
As far as Super Metro is concerned, this is also the second high-profile fire incident involving their buses. On the evening of August 6, another bus attached to the Sacco went up in flames along Naivasha Road.
