The Law Society of Kenya has invited all desiring members of its society for the conferment of the rank of Senior Counsel to submit their applications.

In an official notice dated September 2, the Society’s President, Faith Odhiambo and CEO Florence W. Muturi, revealed that the new 2025 cycle of confirmation is expected to generate significant interest in the legal profession.

‘’Pursuant to Rule 5 of the Advocates (Senior Counsel Conferment and Privileges) Rules, 2011, the Committee on Senior Counsel hereby invites members of the Society with the requisite qualifications and interest in the conferment of the rank of Senior Counsel to submit applications for consideration,’’ the statement read in part.

According to the Society, the invitation follows Rule 5 of the Advocates (Senior Counsel Conferment and Privileges) Rules, 2011, which mandates the Committee on Senior Counsel to receive and evaluate applications from qualified members of the Society.

‘’Pursuant to Rule 4 of the Rules, the Committee on Senior Counsel, comprising representatives of key stakeholders in the legal profession, is mandated to receive, consider, and evaluate applications from eligible members, and to make recommendations to the President for conferment of the rank,’’ the statement continued.

How to Apply:

All interested applicants have been advised to submit detailed documentation demonstrating that they meet the criteria outlined under Rule 7 of the Rules.

The documentation required includes evidence of irreproachable professional conduct, exemplary service to the legal profession, and contributions to public service in Kenya.

The supporting documents must be in a sealed envelope clearly marked ‘Senior Counsel Conferment’. The application should be addressed to the Secretary/CEO, Law Society of Kenya, Lavington, Opposite Valley Arcade, Gitanga Road, P. O. Box 72219-00200 Nairobi.

All qualified members have been asked to submit their applications, together with all supporting documents, to an online portal listed by the society.

The end date for the applications is set for  Friday, October 3, 2025, by 5pm.

The conferment of Senior Counsel has become a highly anticipated event, with the event being rigorous, ensuring that only those who genuinely merit the recognition are considered.

The notice comes days after LSK opposed the Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which seeks to grant the President powers to confer the rank of Senior Counsel.
