Senior Advisor on Constitutional Affairs and Human Rights, Makau Mutua, now says that impeaching Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is politically impossible.

Mutua, in a brief statement on Wednesday morning, warned that Sakaja's impeachment could be a major political mistake for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.

He expressed reservations with the timing of Sakaja's impeachment, terming it a 'silly season' as it could have dire consequences, particularly on the ODM party.

According to him, the Nairobi Governor's impeachment would be an own-goal by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's party as it would weaken the well-established, broad-based administration.

The senior advisor in President William Ruto's administration noted that such could never happen even in developed democracies such as the United States.

"If you understand politics, you should know it’s a head-scratcher to impeach Governor Johnson Sakaja. It would be an own-goal by the ODM party in the midst of the silly season," Mutua noted.

"Given the matrix, such a gargantuan political blunder can’t happen, even in the citadel of the United States," he added.

Mutua's argument comes a day after Nairobi Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) suspended their push to impeach the County boss following the intervention of the Head of State and Raila Odinga.

Odinga on Tuesday held a meeting with Nairobi MCAs allied to the ODM party and urged them to put their impeachment plan on hold for the next 60 days.

A similar situation was witnessed with the Kenya Kwanza coalition as Ruto rallied MCAs allied to the coalition to drop their push for Governor Sakaja's impeachment.

During the parallel meetings, the Nairobi MCAs presented their petition against Sakaja, which they claimed was sufficient to impeach the County administrator.

The Nairobi Governor, who was present in both meetings, promised to involve the ward representatives through consultations in running the capital city.
