The United Opposition has appointed Dr Mukhisa Kituyi, a former Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), as its Spokesperson and head of the Opposition Secretariat.
The United Opposition, comprising former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, People's Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, and Wiper Patriotic Front party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, appointed Kituyi following a meeting at the SKM Headquarters in Karen on Wednesday.
The meeting saw the attendance of other key leaders in the United Opposition, including former CSs Justin Muturi, Fred Matiang'i, and Eugene Wamalwa.
''The United Opposition has appointed Dr Mukhisa Kituyi as their spokesperson and the Head of the Opposition Secretariat,'' the brief statement by the leaders read.
The main aim of the meeting, according to the leaders, was to deliberate on the Opposition's role in liberating the nation.
According to the leaders, Kituyi's appointment is one of the strategies to ensure their agenda is met.
''We are united in our patriotic duty to liberate our nation. We shall get this nation back on track together,'' the leaders emphasised. The leaders also used the meeting to encourage each other to continue strengthening their parties even as they continue to talk about a possible joint ticket to take on Ruto in 2027.
Kituyi is a veteran Kenyan politician, diplomat, and policy strategist who served as the Member of Parliament for Kimilili from 1992 to 2007.
He also served as Minister for Trade and Industry under former President Mwai Kibaki and also held the position of Chief Executive at the Kenya Institute of Governance.
He resigned from his UNCTAD role in 2021, after announcing his presidential ambitions. However, in 2022, he later dropped from the race in support of Azimio leader Raila Odinga.
As spokesperson, Kituyi will represent the six political parties that form the United Opposition coalition, among them DCP, WPF, and PLP.
Others are the Democratic Action Party–Kenya, headed by Eugene Wamalwa; the Democratic Party, under Justin Muturi; and the Jubilee Party, which is represented by its chairman, Torome Saitoti, with the backing of former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.
