Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has called on all police officers to recommit to their ethical and moral values, as they are the face of the police service in the country.
Kanja spoke in the wake of a viral photo incident between police officers from Lodwar, Turkana County, and socialite Vera Sidika that sparked public debate over police conduct.
In the viral video, police officers were seen scrambling for a chance to take a selfie with the socialite, prompting the public to question their conduct and public image.
Speaking during the launch of the OCD National Consultative Conference at the National Police Leadership Academy (NPLA) in Ngong, the IG revealed that police officers must embody professionalism, discipline, and integrity at all times.
"The police IG told the officers that they are the face, voice, and moral compass of the Service; hence, the transformation of police stations begins with their leadership. He reminded them that they are responsible for ensuring that their stations operate effectively, efficiently, and within the confines of the law," read a post by the NPS quoting the IG.
The four-day conference brought together 225 OCSs from across the country.
The forum, themed “Transforming Police Stations into Centres of Excellence and Service Delivery,” aimed to strengthen leadership, operational preparedness, and community engagement within police stations.
The IG quoted Article 244 (a) of the Constitution to remind the officers that the National Police Service is constitutionally mandated to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and discipline.
All police officers were urged to ensure their stations operated within the law and treat members of the public with civility and respect.
The IG emphasised that his office will not condone any station commander who fails to meet the standards laid down in the Standing Orders (SSO) and the NPS Act.
Meanwhile, Kanja encouraged officers to take advantage of the NPLA at Ngong and use the platform to add value to themselves and become better and more reliable managers.
DIG Eliud Lagat was also present at the opening, where Kanja reminded them that human rights must be respected and encouraged them to advise their personnel to carry out their duties with proper consideration for the laws of the land.
