Following multiple online reports of attacks on civilians in Nairobi's central business district (CBD), police have issued a warning to social media content creators who falsely report being victims of gang attacks.

On September 5, Nairobi Regional Police Commander George Seda said that some TikTok creators are using security incidents to gain popularity and mislead people.

He explained that many of these alleged attacks are not reported to the police, which makes their stories seem untrue.

He added that victims should report any incidents to the police station instead of posting about them on social media, to allow the police to take proper action.

"For those individuals whose intentions are not good for this city, by magnifying issues through various channels. We, as the policing agency we have all the resources which we have employed now the view of getting those perpetrators," Seda said.

Increased Police Presence

Seda also confirmed that police have increased their presence in the city centre.

He noted that officers from various police departments have been deployed to the Central Business District (CBD) to ensure it remains safe for residents and visitors.

He said that an increased police visibility was intended to create a secure environment where businesses can operate as usual.

"CBD is safe, businesses are going on as usual. The police have been deployed and police visibility is enhanced as usual, and it contains all agencies of police, which are supposed to undertake various aspects of ensuring that the city is safe," Seda said.

In an ongoing crackdown that began on September 3, 2025, police have arrested 214 suspects linked to a series of criminal activities in the CBD.

The operation was launched jointly by Nairobi County and the National Police Service to combat a surge in mugging incidents.

The crackdown follows a widespread social media outcry and disturbing video testimonies from citizens who reported being victims of robberies using horrific tactics, including a substance known as "Devil's breath."

On September 3, Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria announced the joint operation, highlighting the police's commitment to making the city safer for everyone.
