A Pakistani national narrowly escaped death after an enraged mob descended on him over allegations of defrauding locals through deceitful schemes in Nakuru County.
After being cornered by locals on charges of defrauding several people of their money under false pretences, the suspect was dramatically rescued by police officers.
According to authorities, the suspect was in the company of two others at the time of the onslaught from members of the public.
The two accomplices, believed to also be part of the fraud scheme, managed to escape and are being pursued by authorities.
Preliminary investigations linked the trio to a string of fraud cases in the Nakuru area. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) further revealed that the main suspect was out on bond for similar charges.
He was expected to report back to Ahero Police Station on August 20, but snubbed a summons, instead deciding to pursue his schemes.
"It was also established that Shabbir was out on bond from Ahero Police Station, where he had previously been charged with obtaining money by false pretences. He had been ordered to report back to the station on August 20, 2025, but instead continued with his fraudulent activities," a statement from DCI read.
The suspect is set to remain in police custody, pending arraignment, although it remains unclear how exactly he defrauded locals under false pretences.
Cases of foreigners duping locals are not uncommon; however, many of the schemes involve promises of high returns on investment or a fraudster promising a high-paying job under the condition that the candidate pays certain fees.
This was the second incident in less than 24 hours involving the nabbing of a fraudster, coming just days after a suspected fake gold scammer was nabbed in Lang'ata sub-county.
Coincidentally, the suspect was apprehended at Sultan Suites, Ngong View Estate, after being linked to a fraudulent gold deal involving a Pakistani national.
The foreigner had reported to the police that he was conned out of Ksh4,506,600 (USD 34,800) after being presented with 500 grams of counterfeit gold.
