The National Police Service has reported the recovery of an AK-47 rifle while responding to a kidnapping attempt involving a 16-year-old girl.
Police officers from Lorugum Police Station in Turkana County were reportedly acting on a tip-off from members of the public about a disturbance at a residence in the area.
An armed man was said to have stormed the home in Kaapus Location and attempted to take away a 16-year-old girl forcibly.
When police officers, led by the station’s OCS, arrived, the man managed to evade arrest; however, the AK-47 firearm was recovered and secured as an exhibit.
According to a report by the Service on Monday, the firearm was recovered alongside six rounds of ammunition and one spent cartridge.
A manhunt for the suspect has since been launched to ensure his arrest and eventual charging in court.
The NPS statement concluded by thanking members of the public for acting swiftly to report the matter to the authorities.
"National Police Service commends members of the public for their unwavering cooperation with security agencies and urges them to continue sharing information at their nearest police post or station," the statement concluded, urging more Kenyans to continue sending similar tips.
This comes just a day after another firearm was recovered in the Kabetwa area of Tot, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
The gun was recovered from a suspected bandit by a multi-agency security team conducting an intelligence-led operation in the area.
Alongside the firearm were twelve rounds of ammunition, two magazines and a smoke jacket.
The suspect was taken into custody immediately for processing, as he awaits arraignment in court.
