At least two people have died, while seven others have sustained injuries following an accident that occurred in the Mabera area, Kuria North, Migori County.
The accident, which took place on Wednesday evening, occurred after a speeding Probox lost control and rammed into an oncoming trailer at a bridge along the Isebania-Migori highway.
According to Kuria West Sub-County Police Commander Reuben Bett, the two vehicles were moving in opposite directions when the Probox crashed into the trailer.
He said a rescue team was immediately dispatched to the scene, and with the collaboration of the police officers, the injured were rushed to various facilities within Migori for treatment.
Reports indicated that one of the deceased was the driver of the Probox, who was ferrying passengers to Isebania when the vehicle crashed into the trailer that was headed to Migori.
Those who sustained critical injuries were taken to Akidiva Hospital, with the bodies of the deceased taken to the mortuary of the same facility.
While commending the area residents for their prompt response to the accident, Bett called on road users, particularly drivers, to be cautious when using the roads.
Speaking to the press moments after the crash, the residents called on the government to revamp the Nyamitembe bridge where the accident occurred.
According to the residents, it was not the first time that an accident had taken place at the bridge. While calling for the expansion of the bridge, they accused the government of negligence.
"I want to urge the government to come and inspect this bridge and expand it because it is narrow. If a vehicle passes through the bridge at a high speed, then there must be an accident," said one of the residents.
The Mabera accident adds to the number of road crashes witnessed across the country this week. Just a day before, six people lost their lives while four others sustained injuries after a trailer lost control and hit them.
The accident, which took place on Monday, September 15, happened along the Kisumu-Kericho highway after the lorry veered off the road and knocked down the pedestrians who were waiting to board a matatu.
