Prominent Kenyan athlete and gold medallist Jairus Birech has passed away, with reports indicating that the deceased passed away on Thursday night after a brief illness.
The deceased's demise was first announced by a family member, who revealed that the athlete, who was nicknamed KapKitiyo, passed away on Thursday, September 18, at around 8.30 pm.
"Dear Friends, It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we, the family of Jairus Kipchoge Birech (KapKitiyo), former 3000m steeplechase athlete, announce his passing. Jairus peacefully went to be with the Lord last night at around 8:30 pm," the post read.
"We kindly ask for your prayers and support during this difficult time, as we come to terms with this great loss. May the Lord grant him eternal rest and peace," it further read.
The 32-year-old was a highly decorated 3000-metre steeplechase runner and was ranked among the world's top ten best in the race. In 2014, he was a gold medallist at the African Championships.
In the same year, Birech won silver at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. In 2015, he again won gold at the Diamond League.
Birech made a breakthrough in athletics way back in 2010 when he participated in his first 3000 steeplechase race and clocked under 8.50 minutes.
Following his demise, several Kenyans took to social media to express their condolences, including senior politicians and fellow Kenyan and international athletes.
Among those who mourned Birech is Kesses Member of Parliament Julius Rutto, who eulogised the deceased as a disciplined, dedicated, and brilliant person who brought immense pride to Kenya.
"Deeply saddened by the untimely passing of our 3000m steeplechase star, Jairus Kipchoge Birech. His discipline, dedication, and brilliance on the track brought immense pride to our nation," said Rutto.
He went on to add, "We celebrate his legacy and pray for comfort to his family and the athletics fraternity. May he rest in peace."
Internet personality Jordan Guenther also mourned Birech, commemorating the moments they shared at the athletics competitions in Paris way back in 2015.
Birech joins the list of Kenyan athletes who have passed away in recent years. Among them is marathon champion Kelvin Kiptum, who passed away in February 2024 and Joseph Njagi, who collapsed and passed away during a race in Uasin Gishu.
