Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has broken his silence over the turbulent moments he faced in the aftermath of the hotly contested 2022 general elections, in which President William Ruto emerged as the winner.
Speaking on Friday afternoon during the Jubilee party's National Delegates Conference in Nairobi, the former Head of State disclosed how the past elections placed him, his family and political allies under threat.
Uhuru revealed that, at the time, his family members and some members of his past administration were targeted by people whom the former President did not disclose.
However, the former Head of State noted that the threats did not stop him from reshaping his political party and appointing new leadership within the Jibilee party.
"Three years ago, at the end of the hotly contested general elections, we faced an atmosphere of hostility not only to our party but also to me, members of my family and members of my administration," Uhuru revealed.
Adding, "But despite that, I stood at this same venue, ready to begin a process that should have been normal in any mature democracy. A process of rejuvenating our party and infusing it with new leadership."
During the event, Uhuru also cautioned leaders against exercising politics of bitterness, anger, and hate, warning that such acts only stop them from achieving their mission and vision.
According to him, politics is about the collective will of the people exercised either by members of a party or by the citizens of a democratic nation through the ballot box.
He went ahead to criticise President Ruto's administration for reportedly using the security agencies to harm Kenyans instead of protecting them.
Uhuru noted that while his administration invested heavily in security infrastructure, the current administration was using the same security apparatus to instil fear among Kenyans.
"This machine that we built, however, was not designed to face its own citizens and wasn't supposed to be a source of fear and conflict to our citizens. It was to protect them, not harm them," he stated.
He also faulted the Kenya Kwanza government for allegedly interfering with the healthcare reforms he introduced during his regime, such as the Lind Mama, which he claimed were eradicated and replaced by 'untried schemes'.
