Nairobi County government has apprehended 10 business traders for allegedly being involved in the unlawful dumping of waste along Jogoo Road.
In a statement shared on September 30, Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment, Geoffrey Mosiria, said that individuals dispose of waste on the road instead of paying for garbage collection for proper disposal.
“Today, I led an enforcement operation along Jogoo Road where we apprehended traders involved in unlawful dumping. Jogoo Road traders have become notorious for unlawful waste disposal, often choosing not to pay for garbage collection and proper disposal services,” he said.
According to Mosiria, among the traders apprehended was a streetman who is often used by traders to dispose of garbage in exchange for a few coins or food.
“We apprehended 10 individuals directly involved in unlawful dumping, including one notorious street man who is often used by traders to dispose of waste in exchange for a few coins or food,” he added.
He added that since most of the traders are not complying with the laws of keeping the city clean, the county is working on providing strict enforcement against all lawbreakers.
He noted that despite warning notices from the county government, the traders failed to comply, thus prompting the apprehension.
Mosiria said that the enforcement was not meant to punish but to protect the health, dignity, and cleanliness of our city.
"We shall sustain this exercise until full compliance is achieved. Enforcement is not meant to punish but to protect the health, dignity, and cleanliness of our city."
"I will personally camp along Jogoo Road for the next one week to ensure this menace is fully addressed and compliance is achieved," Mosiria stated.
He warned other traders that the county is continuing with the crackdown on business owners who dispose of waste on the road, mostly the hotel owners.
According to Mosiria, his department will not retreat in reinforcing its crackdown against such traders, in a bid to improve waste management in the city.
