Kitui Speaker Kevin Katisya has suspended a group of Members of the County Assembly (MCA) behind his impeachment motion for 90 days.
Katisya’s impeachment motion came after Matinyani MCA Sylvester Munyalo filed a notice accusing him of abusing office, gross violation of the constitution and conflict of interest.
Reportedly, 31 MCAs appended their signatures supporting the motion filed.
The Speaker suspended Munyalo from the House over alleged gross misconduct alongside 10 other MCAs .
Katisya supported his ruling, stating that the MCAs’ actions were causing disruption and undermining the Assembly’s dignity.
The suspension effectively halts the impeachment bid since motions are bound by time.
In a rejoinder, Munyalo said that the suspension will not stop him from going ahead with Katisya’s impeachment motion
He argued that the Speaker has no power to suspend MCAs unless they have defended themselves before the privilege committee.
"I want to tell you that the speaker's decision to read our names, claiming we are suspended, is of no consequence. Expect all of us in the Assembly when sittings resume next week on Tuesday," Munyalo said.
Kericho MCAs
Last month, four MCAs were suspended from the Kericho County Assembly after they were captured on CCTV stoning the governor's office.
The incident allegedly occurred during the impeachment process of Governor Eric Mutai.
The four were banned from attending Assembly proceedings for 90 days.
In the CCTV video, the MCAs could be seen throwing stones and destroying property at the governor’s office. The office is only a few metres from the county assembly.
The footage also showed the reps smashing windows of the Kericho County Assembly building.
