Two people have died after being attacked by elephants in separate incidents in Isiolo and Kwale counties.
In Kwale County, a scout was attacked by an elephant in the Samburu area. According to reports, the incident occurred on Mackinnon Road at the Kenya Wildlife Service, while the victim was walking to his kitchen.
The elephant had been camping out and attacked and killed him instantly. After the incident, the elephant escaped the scene.
Authorities have since visited the scene and moved the body to a local mortuary pending an autopsy, while investigations into the incident continue.
In Isiolo, a 16-year-old was trampled by an elephant as he was herding livestock in Isiolo’s Nasuru Conservancy.
KWS officials and the Police said that the boy was attacked near the Ewaso Nyiro River.
The two incidents follow a case in August where a man was trampled to death by a herd of elephants that invaded his farm in Kitui.
Human Wildlife Conflict Compensation
The families were asked to file a compensation claim under the Human Wildlife Conflict Compensation programme.
In May 2025, Kenya introduced the third phase of the compensation programme to address these incidents and support affected families.
President William Ruto launched this programme at Meru National Park, unveiling the Wildlife Conservation Card to help fund conservation efforts.
“Compensation is justice, but prevention is progress,” Ruto said, emphasizing the need for long-term solutions that benefit both people and wildlife.
“Through the Conservation Card, fencing, and community‑led tourism, we are turning conflict into opportunity,” he added.
