Two pupils died while two others were left nursing serious injuries after a freak accident involving debris at an institution in Nairobi's Kayole area.
The two pupils attached to Emmanuel New Life Learning Centre succumbed to their injuries after construction debris from a neighbouring building site collapsed onto the school compound on the afternoon of Monday, October 6.
According to reports, the learners, who were out for lunch break, were washing their hands at a nearby outlet when heavy debris landed on them.
Images from the scene painted a worrying picture, as the learners met their death in an area surrounded by buildings still under construction.
Construction bricks, including some which were broken, were also spotted at the scene, and it is believed they are the ones which caused the fatal injuries.
The two students who sustained injuries from the incident were rushed to Uwezo Clinic for emergency treatment before being referred to Mama Lucy Hospital.
Authorities have since launched investigations into the incident to determine whether the construction site met safety and regulatory standards.
In July 2025, the Nairobi County Assembly enacted the Nairobi City County Regularisation of Unauthorised Developments Act to deal with buildings constructed in the city without proper approval.
According to Chief Officer for Urban Development and Planning, Patrick Analo, the initiative will grant approvals to buildings and structures erected without permits but which meet minimum planning and safety standards.
Analo says the initiative seeks to grant approvals to buildings and structures erected without permits, but which meet minimum planning and safety standards.
Unapproved buildings and landlords who will fail to adhere to the directive will face enforcement under the Physical and Land Use Planning Act, 2019.
The Act stipulates that such landlords be issued with enforcement notices requiring the developer to stop further construction or use of the property.
