The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced the temporary closure of Jamhuri Road in Nairobi for two days to facilitate maintenance works along the route.

According to KURA, the road will be closed from Friday, October 10, at 8pm to Sunday, October 12, at 11pm, a move that is expected to disrupt transportation.

In a notice dated Thursday, October 9, the Authority noted that the works would involve the construction of essential drainage and sewer infrastructure to enhance sewage systems and improve sanitation in the area, particularly during rainy seasons.

The construction of drainages and sewer systems along the route is part of the ongoing multi-billion-shilling Talanta Sports City Project at Jamhuri Sports Grounds.

Following the announcement, KURA went ahead to provide an alternative route for drivers, with motorists advised to use Sanctuary Road and Kibera Drive.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause during this period," said KURA Director General Silas Kinoti.

KURA's notice comes barely three weeks after Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo announced plans to construct extensive drainage installations near Talanta Stadium to ensure both functionality and structural sustainability of the project.

The Ksh44 billion project began in March 2024 and is expected to be a 60,000-spectator capacity stadium. It boasts an ultra-modern design that includes a computerised hydraulic tension cable lifting roof.

Addressing the press on September 18, during a routine inspection of the project, PS Omollo said upon its completion, the stadium would be used to host concerts, cultural festivals, exhibitions and national celebrations.

He added that the stadium would feature seven changing rooms, VIP lounges, modern locker rooms, advanced media centres, Video Assistant Referee (VAR) booths and goal-line technology.

"The facility will be the second colossal sports infrastructure to be built since the Moi International Sports Centre - Kasarani, which was completed in 1987. 38 years ago," Omollo stated.

"Importantly, its construction has created thousands of jobs, especially for youth and women, contributing directly to the economy and empowering households," he added.
