Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has commended KANU party leader Gideon Moi for his decision not to run for the Baringo senatorial seat.

Speaking on Thursday evening at a Jukwa La Usalama Forum, Murkomen described Moi's decision as wise and as a sign of unity among Kenyans.

According to the CS, it was an expression of the KANU leader's political maturity. He added that there comes a time when it is more dignified for a veteran to step aside instead of competing with his juniors.

He noted that, although Moi's decision disappointed some of his supporters, it was the best move for his reputation and political career.

"Gideon Moi has done a wise thing; it could have seemed very bad if he had continued to run for the seat. There is a stage if you reach you cannot compete with young people to run for a political seat," Murkomen stated.

Adding, "I know some supporters might have been disappointed, but he has done a wise thing."

Broad-based Government

Murkomen went ahead to label Gideon Moi's meeting with President William Ruto at State House in Nairobi as a sign of unity, especially amidst the formation of the broad-based government.

The CS disclosed that Gideon's decision to meet Ruto was part of the Head of State's political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

"The meeting with the President was also a sign of unity because, as you are aware, there is a broad-based government which has Raila and former President Uhuru Kenyatta's allies in it," Murkomen revealed.

'So, Gideon Moi has been invited to be in the broad-based government.  We are also looking at the future in 2027, so that we can come together," he added.

Murkomen's comments come hours after the KANU party formally announced the withdrawal of Gideon Moi from the Baringo Senatorial race after a series of meetings with Ruto.

KANU party Secretary General George Wainaina revealed that the party would no longer field a candidate for the senatorial race, granting the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party a boost.

Reports indicated that Ruto and Moi had previously held two meetings before they held the last meeting yesterday, where the Head of State reportedly compelled the KANU leader to step aside.
