A businessman was reportedly robbed of Ksh7 million while carrying the money in a school bag at a petrol station off Waiyaki Way in Nairobi.
The victim was robbed after boarding a private vehicle in Eastleigh, which dropped him off at a petrol station near ABC Place along Waiyaki Way. He intended to board a public service vehicle to Bondo from there.
According to reports, the man told police that this was not the first time he had carried such a large sum of money on public transport.
The victim said that, on October 8, 2025, after being dropped off at the petrol station, the matatu he was to board arrived at around 9 pm.
Around the same time, two men pulled up on a motorcycle.
Victim narrated that he heard a gunshot and when he turned to check what was happening, someone grabbed the bag which had money in it.
After grabbing the bag, the man, who had a gun, jumped on the standby motorcycle before taking off with the rider.
As they left the scene, the gunman shot into the air as they sped off. He added that the gunshot led those around the scene including passengers in the matatu, motorists and petrol attendants, to take cover.
The victim was questioned about how he had acquired such a large sum of money. He told the police that he worked in gold mining in Bondo.
George Seda, the Nairobi police boss, stated that he suspected the robbers might have had prior knowledge of the businessman's movements.
After visiting the scene, Seda said that two cartridges believed to have been used during the incident were taken for ballistic analysis.
He added that the police are currently investigating the robbery with the help of security cameras in the area.
"A team is on the ground and we believe the suspects will be caught soon," said Seda.
